Privacy
Universe has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no cookies. Everything is computed in your browser; this site has no server of its own to send anything to.
What stays on your device
- Your location, only if you press My location (in the sky view or an eclipse's Where panel) and allow your browser to share it. It is used in this tab to show your sky and eclipse times, and is never saved or sent anywhere by Universe.
- Share links carry the moment and the view. If you stand at your own location, the link carries your area to about 10 km, not your spot; it carries the exact spot only if you choose Use my exact location.
- One setting, whether surfaces are shown, kept in your browser's local storage under
universe:surfaces.
Hosts your browser contacts
Earth's imagery and map are loaded directly by your browser from these services, which see your IP address and which area of Earth you are looking at, as with any map site:
| gibs.earthdata.nasa.gov | NASA Blue Marble and city lights, the whole globe |
|---|---|
| tiles.maps.eox.at | Sentinel-2 cloudless imagery when you zoom in on Earth |
| tiles.openfreemap.org | OpenStreetMap streets, borders and place names when you zoom in further |
Turning off Surfaces or Map in Layers stops these requests. Fonts, star catalogues, orbits, spacecraft tracks and the maps of other worlds are served with the site itself. Links to sources (Wikipedia, NASA) are only followed if you open them.
The hosting provider
The site is served as static files. The host keeps standard access logs (IP address, time, page) under its own policy; Universe adds nothing to them.
